Synagogue Memorial, Leipzig
One thing that strikes me about Germany is how moving their monuments are. The monument to the Grand Synagogue of Leipzig is one of the more interesting.
The synagogue was burned down by fascists on Kristallnacht – ‘the night of broken glass’ – in 1938 and now 140 empty bronze chairs stand in its place. The monument is quite minimalist with just a short description in German, English, Russian and Hebrew, but I think the effect is really striking.
One thing I couldn’t find out was whether the monument was erected by the former GDR government or reunited Germany.
